Coronavirus Update

March 6, 2020

As many of you have heard by now, there are three reported cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Montgomery County, this first such reported cases in Maryland.

I wanted to provide to you the information we have so far, and some tips and additional sources of information to keep you informed.

First, The Cases
==========

The three individuals, a couple in their 70s and a woman in her 50s, were on a cruise out of the country and that current appears to be the only source. They are quarantined in their homes, under medical supervision, and their symptoms appear to be mild and controlled. To date, there is no indication that it has spread but the Department of Health is investigating.

As of right now, Governor Hogan has declared a State of Emergency as a precautionary measure in order to activate the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, and the State of Maryland has approximately 13,000 test kits for the virus and more on the way. Both the State Department of Health and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services have plans in place for testing as well as for containment, should that be necessary.

The University System of Maryland and Montgomery County Public Schools also have emergency plans in place to deal with any cases that arise. Both are continuing to stay open as there is no reason to close buildings or cancel classes at this time.

Tips to Stay Healthy
==========

The same information you’ve been hearing about how to keep from contracting the virus continue to hold true:

1. Wash you hands regularly using soap and hot (comfortably hot, don’t burn yourself) water for at least 20 seconds. A good comparison is, imagine you just finished eating Old Bay crabs, and now you need to change your contact lenses.

2. Avoid touching your face if you can.

3. Avoid people who are ill.

4. If you are feeling ill with symptoms that resemble a cold or flu, then please do not go to work or school, and seek medical attention as appropriate.
