Real ID Compliance in Maryland

May 13, 2019

Many of you have seen reports on various news outlets such as this one in The Baltimore Sun concerning getting your driver’s license or State identification renewed in time to be compliant with federal Real ID laws.

I have received numerous inquiries from constituents who have been concerned that their driver’s license or ID card will not be accepted for federal purposes, such as boarding an airline or coming into a federal building or office.

I have contacted the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) to get more information for you.

There are several coming deadlines through June where SOME individuals (namely those with expiring or previously non-compliant driver’s licenses or ID cards) will need to get renewed to a Real ID compliant license.

If you are one of those individuals, MVA has already made multiple attempts to contact you over mail and email.

If you are concerned you missed this communication, or are not sure, you can use MVA’s Online License Lookup Tool to check.

If you are not one of the individuals that needs to renew by next month, your current driver’s license or State-issued ID card will continue to function in every way it has before.

You will have until 2020 (next year) to go through this process and become compliant.

In order to get a Real ID compliant document, you will need to present a list of approved documents to verify age, identity, address, and other pieces of information.

To figure out what you need to provide, the MVA Online Document Guide can walk you through it.

If you have any questions or run into issues with MVA, my office is always available to assist you.
